About Us

About Bikram Yoga Santa Barbara:
Bikram Yoga Santa Barbara is Santa Barbara’s only hot yoga studio. We have been teaching yoga in Santa Barbara for 11 years. The studio is a warm (not just because of the heat!) and welcoming community of people from all walks of life and all ages. You will find experienced yoga practitioners practicing with beginners and first-time clients in every class. You will find retired fire-fighters practicing next to college students, doctors and electricians. We are very proud of the diversity of our clientele. Everyone works hard, gets good and sweaty and has a powerful, often life-changing experience in every class. Many of our students come 5 or 6 times a week, some come every single day and have been doing so for years.

At Bikram Yoga Santa Barbara (BYSB), you will experience 90 minutes of intense yoga in every class. The room is heated to 105 degrees, to give you a deep detoxifying sweat. The sequence of postures was scientifically designed to give you maximum cardiovascular benefits, as well as strengthening and toning of the entire body. Every one of our teachers has been through the vigorous training program of Bikram’s Yoga College of India, and every teacher has been certified by Bikram Choudhary himself. You will receive quality instruction from a teacher who has been taught about the sciences of yoga and anatomy and will be able to answer your questions knowledgeably.

At BYSB the classes are challenging, and you will work hard, but we never pressure students to push themselves beyond what is right for their body. We understand that everyone is working with their own physical, and mental challenges, so we encourage students to take short breaks during class and rest when they need to.

The Bikram Method
Bikram Yoga is unlike any other Yoga class. It is a series of twenty-six asana poses designed to scientifically warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons in the order in which they should be stretched. The practice of these twenty-six poses will enhance mind and body, relax, strengthen, reshape and heal all of you over time. Bikram teaches you not only the ideal pose – how you will eventually be able to do it – but also the reality – telling you what problems you will have as you try to do the pose, what clues will help you make rapid progress, and where you might be tempted to “cheat,” thus depriving yourself of the benefit of doing the pose properly.

Follow the exercises in order, exactly as Bikram directs, and you won’t go wrong. How quickly you progress will depend on you, your natural ability and how well you understand what the body is trying to accomplish with each pose. In Yoga there is no standard of comparison except yourself. Perfect is the best you can do that day.

About Bikram Choudhury
Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India. Born in Calcutta fifty-two years ago, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (Autobiography of a Yogi, founder of the Self Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles). Bikram practiced Yoga four to six hours a day with six thousand other students at Ghosh’s College of Physical Education in Calcutta; and at the age of thirteen, he won the National India Yoga contest. He was undefeated for three years.
At seventeen, an injury to his knee brought the prediction from leading European doctors that he would never walk again. Not accepting their pronouncement, he had himself carried back to Bishnu Ghosh’s school, for he knew that if anyone could help to heal his knee, it was his teacher. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to scientifically document Yoga’s ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body.

Bikram was asked by Ghosh to start several Yoga schools in India. There Bikram came into his own. The schools were so successful that at Bishnu’s request Bikram traveled to Japan and opened two more. He has since brought his curative methods of Yoga therapy around the world.
